For the first time in 45 years homicide has dropped off the top 15 causes of death in the United States. It’s really unexpected when we hear on the news about all the murders throughout the country on any given day. Could it be because there are fewer homicides, or if deaths from heart disease and cancer have overtaken murders.
An amazing thing has happened. For the first time in 45 years, murder isn’t one of the top 15 causes of death in the United States, so reports the government health officials. Murder was overtaken by respiratory failure, which is mainly seen in the elderly. This is the first time since 1935 that homicide hasn’t been at the top of the list. Is that good news or what? Infant deaths have also dropped to an all time low of 6.14 deaths per 1000 babies. Heart disease and cancer remain in the top killers. Those two diseases account for nearly half the nations 2.4 million deaths in 2010.
Death counts rose for Alzheimer’s, kidney disease, chronic liver disease, Parkinson’s and pneumonia. Other leading causes of disease dropped including, stroke. chronic lower respiratory diseases, accidents, flu, and blood infections. U.S. life expectancy for a child born in 2010 is about 78 years. Hispanic men and women have the longest life expectancy, which is puzzling to experts.
